Four reasons to have a birth photographer!
1. Keep the oxytocin levels high reviewing your birth photos.
2. The day your baby is born captured in a documentry style to keep and share for generations.
3. I will be a constant person in your birth space, unlike shift changes in midwives.
4. There is no do over.
Birth photography- what is it?
From active labor, through the first few hours of your new baby’s life in a beautiful and real documentary style. During active labor I photograph you and your partner, their support and your strength. We discuss what you are comfortable with in terms of crowning and delivery. Once Bub is earthside, I will cover first latch breastfeeding, skin to skin, weighing and measuring and first cuddles with loved ones that are present.
Why birth photos
Birth photography is perhaps one of the most important types of photography out there! Birth is by far one of the most defining and most treasured and memorable life events that you will ever experience. There are certain moments of life that deserve to be professionally documented through fantastic photography….your wedding day, the birth of your babies, and your children’s milestones. Often people do not think to reserve a birth photographer because birth can be such a private event, however, afterwards many regret not having better photos to remember such a momentous life occasion by. Often, families leave the job of taking photos up to the Dad, nurses, doulas, or midwives, but then find that the other members of their birth team get quite busy with their own designated jobs and Birth photographers sole role is to focus on capturing every precious moment so your team can focus on what they were meant to focus on. The memory and experience of the birth can often be blurry for a mother because she becomes so focused on the work she is doing to birth her child. Looking back and remembering the birth journey and experience through a different lens can help the mother value and embrace her journey even more. And that brand new baby freshly born…such a fleeting moment and one that fades so quickly, but so very worth being professionally preserved through beautiful photography!
It is important to hire a birth photographer who has experience around birthing mothers and knowledge of the birth process. Experienced birth photographers know the demeanor to have in the birth space, how to respect and work with care providers, and how to sensitively document the story of birth. I have such a great respect for birthing mothers and the birth process itself. I understand the incredible amount of focus, privacy, energy, and commitment the laboring mother must have. I am experienced in the use of only natural lighting, in very dim lighting situations, so as to not disturb the mother. Flash is only used where absolutely needed and with mums permission. I love being a fly on the wall and would never interfere in your journey but simply document it within your sacred space.
Please know that we discuss what you are comfortable with being photographed!
The purpose of birth photography is purely and simply to capture beautiful “family” moments on the day a new baby is born.
These moments focus wholly and solely on the family – and the moments they share with each other, the emotions they experience and the memories they create together. We place strong emphasis on what the family is doing, feeling and experiencing rather than who else is in the room and the tasks they are doing. Why? Because our clients want photos of themselves and their baby, not photos of their care providers or medical procedures.
Birth photography is having an unexpected role in helping women to accept their birth outcomes, bond better with their babies and is minimising the effects of both postpartum depression and post-traumatic stress. The photos created are helping women to process what has happened during their birth and gives them something positive to reflect upon.
Telling your children how they came into the world is beautiful, imagine showing them. The first time you saw them, looking at their features falling in love more and more. Completely natural images of love. Invite me to document your birth story. Let's Connect
